Kochi: A new technology initiative developed in Kerala aims to make cinema more accessible while reducing costs for independent filmmakers. EarView, an innovative mobile application developed by filmmaker Raghunath N B, offers a budget-friendly method for implementing audio description tracks in films, helping filmmakers meet accessibility requirements without the high costs typically associated with conventional solutions.
Audio description is a narration track designed for visually impaired audiences. It describes important visual elements, actions, locations, expressions and scene changes during natural pauses in dialogue, enabling people with visual disabilities to enjoy films more independently. Accessibility requirements are becoming increasingly important across the film industry, film festivals, public screenings and digital distribution platforms.
However, implementing audio description tracks often involves specialized hardware, dedicated infrastructure or expensive commercial platforms, making it difficult for independent filmmakers, parallel cinema creators, award-winning festival filmmakers and low-budget productions to adopt accessibility features.
EarView was developed specifically to address this challenge.
The application allows audiences to use their own smartphones and headphones to access synchronized audio description tracks while watching a film in theatres, community screenings, film festivals or other venues. By eliminating the need for costly specialized equipment, EarView significantly reduces the overall implementation cost for accessibility services.
According to its developer, the objective was to create an affordable and practical solution that would allow smaller productions to embrace accessibility without facing financial barriers.
βMany independent filmmakers want to make their films accessible, but the available solutions are often beyond their budget. EarView was designed to provide a practical and economical alternative that allows accessibility to be implemented using devices people already own,β said Raghunath N B.
The app works by synchronizing externally prepared audio description tracks with film playback. Users simply download the required accessibility track and the application automatically aligns it with the film being screened. This approach makes the system suitable for theatrical screenings, film society screenings, educational institutions, cultural events and film festivals.
Apart from supporting visually impaired audiences, the platform offers filmmakers a scalable solution that can be deployed without major technical modifications to existing exhibition infrastructure.
Industry observers note that independent cinema, regional-language productions and festival films often face budget constraints that make accessibility implementation difficult. Affordable solutions such as EarView could help expand accessibility adoption across a wider segment of the filmmaking community.
The initiative reflects a growing movement within the film industry toward inclusive cinema, ensuring that films can be experienced by broader audiences regardless of physical limitations.
EarView is currently being introduced to filmmakers, film societies, cultural organizations and accessibility advocates as a practical tool for promoting inclusive and accessible cinema.
